Washington Monument
General information:
The Washington Monument is an obelisk near the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate the first U.S. president, General George Washington.
Description:
The Monument is the highest stone structure and also the highest obelisk in the world.
It is made of marble, granite and sandstone.
Measures:
Hight: 169,3 metres
Base: 16,8 metres
Stairs: 893
History: First plans were already to Washingtons lifetime but there was no money to do so. Engaged citizen formed the Washington National Monument Society 1832. They wanted to collect donations for the building. In a design contest 1836 Mills was the winner with his concept of a columned hall and a huge obelisk.
1848 they started building the obelisk. After six years the money was gone and the state refused aid because of anti-catholic protests. Then the American Civil War began.
In 1876 the intrest in the monument began again and the state accorded 200.000$ for the building.
In 1884 the obelisk was finished.
Special: No building is allowed to be higher than the obelisk in Washington D.C.
It has got windows on the top.
